Schlafly Saison Ale isn’t for everyone

Posted by Alex on December 1st, 4:46 pm

Schlafly Saison Ale is only available for a few weeks each year and the window of opportunity is rapidly closing. That’s okay; this is a once-a-year beer anyway.

The Saison is brewed in a style called Farmhouse Ale that’s heavy on the yeast. And the yeasts greet you as soon as you open the bottle. It pours a cloudy yellow that’s nearly opaque and has about a half inch of head.

There aren’t a lot of beers that taste like the Saison, but if you’ve had a Hoegaarden, you’re in the right ballpark. There are very deep malts and real earthy character with only the slightest hints of fruit or sweetness. The finish is rough and a bit mealy.

Unless you’re a fan of the style, or a real beer adventurer, pass on the Schlafly Saison (and other farmhouse ales in general).
