Great Britain not so happy with Happy Hour

A concept lost on the English.

A concept lost on the English.

According to last week’s report from the AP, the British government is considering a ban on happy hour specials at bars, clubs and restaurants. Bartenders would be required to sell their booze at a flat rate all day long.

This comes as a reaction to a rise in liver-related deaths among relatively young people, making lawmakers fear alcoholism is emerging as a trend. They posit that reducing the access to cheap booze will curb consumption.

Additionally, the government is launching a $15 million ad campaign to discourage binge drinking.

Not only do these efforts seem like they’re going to be ineffective, but they also demonstrate a clear opposition to having a good time. It looks like the government wants to turn everyone from pub-dwelling English to the stuffy, tea-sipping sort.

Officials will make a decision on the matter within the next several weeks.
